Translation Project

January 27, 2009

I have been doing a lot of-for lack of a better word- soul searching lately and I figure that among other things it is high time I get serious about studying Japanese again. It seems to be the key to realizing many of the other goals that I have set for myself. This may sound absurd, but since moving to Japan I have really let my skills go down the toilet. Why? I work with people who speak better English than I do Japanese, I only speak English to my students for their sake and in general I don’t really do much of anything that requires any improvement beyond conversational ability are all convincing excuses that I have told myself for over a year now. The real reason, however, is a deadly cocktail of complacency and laziness.

I have several plans to get myself back on track, one of them being this post. I am going to translate a book called “The Fiend with 20 Faces: The Bronze Demon” and post it, along with the original Japanese, here on my blog. Check the page listed next to home near the top. I figure I will do one chapter a week. I would love to get comments, questions or constructive criticism about the translation from anyone that is into Japanese. I tend to be really loose with my word selections as to convey the nuance rather than the literal meanings. I already expect someone to challenge my use of demon in the title. Hey, even if you don’t give a crap about Japanese, just enjoy the story, which is the main reason that I am taking the time to do this in addition to my hellish work, gym and study schedule.

Thanks to Dr. Senbei for this post!

Yes You Cat!

January 24, 2009

Obama fever has been sweeping the nation of Japan for awhile now, with silly novelty products, comedians doing impressions, lots of black-face  and this:

An 11 year old student of mine drew this on my whiteboard today. Here, cats say nya instead of meow, so read it as Obameow. Pretty clever for a little kid! Throughout the class, all of the students were dropping Obama references left and right. The teaching point was ‘I want to….’ , which got responses like “I want to live in Obama’s house” and so on, but the best one was “I want to walk on the moon [with]Obama!”

I am really happy to have people from other countries, especially here, viewing America in a positive way again.

Who knew that Will Smith’s wife was in a nu-metal band? I am the last person to find this out? The videos I found are a few years old. I never thought that I would hate a band more than I hate Korn, but this takes it. More like pu-metal, get it? I am guessing that the only reason they haven’t divorced over this is the ultra-low exposure it recieved.

I traded one of my New Year resolutions for this one: learn to sing 愛を取り戻せ (Ai wo Torimodose), the original theme for Fist of the North Star, for karaoke nights. It has so many high notes that I might already be dead, but it will be worth it when I bust it out at the next punk rock nomikai night! It might even become my new Youkai Ningen Bem….

Here is the Korean live action opening with the song. After taking back the love, stick around for the show, it is on a playlist. Horrendous! Terrific!

This will be me soon (only with bigger muscles, cooler glasses and a lot drunker)!

Lost in Thought

January 23, 2009

Time travel ain't easy

I just watched the first 2 episodes of LOST season 5, and here are my initial thoughts:

I really want to believe that Ben has good intentions, no matter how much of a bastard he can be. I am not so sure that this is the case after tonight. After manipulating Sayid into being his personal assassin, he probably didn’t expect him to go along with his new plan to go back to the island. That’s why I think that those were his men in the safe-house and they were supposed to be drugged and transported back silently.  He really seems to have alterior motives behind going back. He is clearly hiding something from them, as could be seen when he pulled out a package from the heating vent while Jack was in the bathroom. Also, what is with the butcher shop now? How many people does he have off the island?

Speaking of Ben’s friends, the lady from Desmond’s strange journeys through time is back and is almost certainly Daniel’s mom. He tells Desmond back at the past hatch to find his mother and explain everything to her. I had always assumed that she was with the Others, but that may not have always been the case. If it were, why didn’t she know that her son had teamed up with Whidmore in trying to take control of the island? Granted, he wasn’t quite sure of what he was getting into. Or was he? Time travel hurts my head.

Is Sun now the enemy as well? She makes pals with Whidmore, and the next thing you know Kate’s maternity rights are being questioned and Sun just happens to be in town at the same time. She tells Kate that she doesn’t blame her for Jin’s “death” (I am not convinced), but the tone of her voice is cold, cold , cold. Her comment abut Aaron and her child playing together was also a little suspicious.

I am so happy that they killed Neil off quickly. I hate it when an extra becomes a main character. They are always whiny and annoying. K-Fed and his blond girlfriend were the worst, their ghastly deaths were not even enough to have made their existence worthwhile.

Hurley is either a genious or a complete and utter failure after turning himself in. Can Ben’s power really extend far enough to get him out of prison? Then again, after watching Prison Break, that doesn’t seem like such a difficult task anymore. Also, I hope that is the last time we see Anna Lucia. I want to eat a Hot Pocket now.

I read that the writers gave away some spoilers at the San Diego comic con, and the one the interested me the most was that Richard was going to be seen barefoot with only 4 toes. This sheds some light on the statue from a few seasons ago, but raises a lot of new questions too. Are the original Others some sort of race that existed before man? The wheel had been around for ages, and they are all immortal. This might be totally off base, but I really hope that this isn’t going to take some sort of religious spin.

Locke/Bentham is totally alive, isn’t he?

What do you suckers think?! I would love to keep a weekly discussion going in my comments with you guys.

PS: What a lame post headline, pun definitely intended dude! bwahahahahahahaha!

I was watching Red Carpet, a usually luke warm comedy show, at the gym today and found this group called Mono-Ii. The “short conto”, or skit, that they did was funny enough to make me look them up on youtube, where I found these great videos. They did a series of skits in which beloved characters like Winnie the Pooh and Doraemon have run-ins with yakuza on the street. For the Japanese speaking readers only, sorry.

Hey Dude, Fill it Up Man!

January 19, 2009

As in my Ipod! This is such a sweet website!!!!

It converts youtube videos into mp3s. This is a wet dream come true for me because there is so much out of print and impossible to find stuff out there, especially being in Japan.  I have no clue as to the legality of this, so I will not use it nor do I condone anyone else using it.

Sunday report

January 19, 2009

I had a very busy, but somewhat disappointing, day yesterday. I went on a quest to find a new watch in Harajuku before  my hair cut appointment there later on in the evening. The watch I had planned to buy was so freakishly big that despite the cool design I couldn’t bring myself to drop 600 bones on it. Then, just to make myself feel bad for not being retardedly rich, I went into a high-end watch shop next to Omotesando Hills. I would say that the average price there was around $11,000 USD. Tucked way back in the corner, however, were some relatively cheap models, most of which were made by GSX. I got really lucky and found this watch! It is a collaboration with Furi Furi Company and was limited to only 666 pieces. It has so many cool features,  my favorite is that the main second hand spins really fast, with one revolution equaling 1 second. It looked chaotic. The price tag was a little on the heavy side, so I had to think it over during my haircut….

I went to a salon named Dude because their policy is to shut up and just cut your hair instead of blabbing your ear off with personal questions. They held up that part of the deal, thank god. I am so sick of answering the same old questions like “Can you eat natto?” every time I go to the barber. The style, on the other hand, well….. I showed him a picture of what I wanted and told him to think 80s skate punk, but came out looking very close to this:

Possessed to Skate?

Possessed to Skate?

I thanked the dude, paid, and walked out of the place thinking maybe it wasn’t so bad. After about 45 seconds of trying my best, I put on my hat. Thankfully it looks fine now that I have rinsed out all the gunk and styled it myself. Also, the place had a hair-washing guy that was a dead ringer for Lurch, only in some silly hipster clothes and black rimmed glasses. In true Lurch fashion, he never spoke a word, just stood there waiting for someone who needed a rinse.

I went back and bought the watch, then had dinner at a 300 yen menu Chinese izakaya in Shibuya with an old friend before calling it a night.

Link Dump

January 15, 2009

I hate to keep posting links here with no actual content, but I really haven’t done anything in the last week and these links are hard to resist.

Do you like monkeys, dogs, cosplay and oil paintings? Do you have 50 bucks?

dd-050-080610-tg01-20x24It’s a shame that international shipping costs double the price of the paintings.
